Bloodhounds

This lovable looking creature is a type of dog called a Bloodhound. This dog is a scent hound who is extremely good and sniffing out what needs to be found. They were originally bred for hunting dear and wild boar, but they are famed for their ability to smell humans over great distances and even over days. The breed is gentle and gets along well with humans.

History

Chien de Saint Hubert translated means dog of Saint Hubert. This is an alternate name for bloodhounds. This is because, according to legend, the first bloodhound was bred at Saint-Hubert Monastery in Belgium in 1000 AD. They likely originated in France. But whether they did or didn’t, the monks of the Abbey of St. Hubert annually send several pairs of black hounds as a gift to the King of France.

Hopefully you’ve learned something new about bloodhounds! I think they’re very interesting dogs. I think I might make “Dog of the Day” a reoccurring theme. See you soon!

Doggie out!
